"To have a great idea, have a lot of
them."
-- Thomas Edison
Candace Kearns Read has worked for twenty years in the film industry as a story analyst, screenwriter and screenwriting instructor, many of those years in the demanding and high stakes world of talent and literary agencies. She is especially attuned to what actors are drawn to in screenplays when thinking about their careers.
Read began her career as a story analyst for talent and literary agencies, primarily the William Morris Agency and International Creative Management. The clients she read scripts for include Michelle Pfeiffer, Denzel Washington, Anthony Hopkins, Marlon Brando, Mel Gibson and Nicolas Cage. She participated in the script development of such films as DANGEROUS MINDS, NIXON, WHITE OLEANDER, CRIMSON TIDE, COURAGE UNDER FIRE, TRAPPED IN PARADISE, and many more.
After leaving ICM, Read became the personal script reader to several A-list actors, including Anthony Hopkins and Marlon Brando, and directors, such as Roger Spottiswoode (TOMORROW NEVER DIES) and Jeff Woolnough (THE DON CHERRY STORY and CELINE.) She also worked as a reader for production companies, including John Wells Productions and Village Roadshow Pictures. In this capacity, she participated in the script development of THE EDGE, INSTINCT, MEET JOE BLACK, ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU, and many others.
She has written over a dozen screenplays herself, all of which have been either optioned or commissioned by producers. Her scripts have been in development with Fox, Disney, Lifetime and HBO.
From 2002 to 2003, Read held the position of Full-Time Professor of Screenwriting at Metropolitan State College of Denver. She has also taught for National University, Antioch University, Community College of Denver, and in Los Angeles Unified School District After-School Enrichment programs.
Read currently teaches online seminars for Screenwriters Online (www.screenwriter.com), creative nonfiction for Antioch University's ILP Masters Degree, and is a script consultant to film industry professionals as well as aspiring screenwriters all over the world. She also helps other writers re-write their autobiographical material and is often hired to co-write or ghostwrite their screenplays. In addition, she is a contributing writer for the online magazine Suite101.com and her articles can be found in the Writing for Stage and Screen section.
Read received an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Antioch University in 2001, and has written a memoir titled Walking Away.
